Alfacalcidol – Oral

Why do I need this medicine?

Alfacalcidol is a form of vitamin D, which is needed by the body to help build strong bones. In order to build strong bones, other nutrients such as calcium and phosphate are important. This medicine helps you absorb more calcium and phosphate from the food you eat or the supplements that you take.

Alfacalcidol is used to treat bone disease and strengthen soft, weak bones caused by diseases such as kidney failure, parathyroid gland disease, rickets (“bow legs”) and osteomalacia (“soft bones”).

It may also be given to newborn babies who do not have enough calcium in their blood.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Alfacalcidol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine with food. Take it at the same time every day.

Alfacalcidol must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
