Why do I need this medicine?
Docusate Sodium belongs to a group of medicines called emollient laxatives. This medicine is used to prevent and treat constipation by allowing water to be absorbed in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass out.
This medicine is also used for the following conditions:
- reduce straining in patients with hemorrhoids (swollen veins in the anus) and anal fissure (cut or tear in anus)
- empty the bowel before a certain diagnostic procedure (together with other medicines)
How do I take this medicine?
Take Docusate Sodium exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Try to take this medicine at the same time each day.
Docusate Sodium is available as a tablet, capsule, or oral syrup.
If you are taking a tablet or capsule, swallow it whole with a drink of water.
If you are taking the oral syrup, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure out your prescribed dose. The syrup should taken with a glass of milk, juice, or infant formula.
