Tenofovir – Oral

Why do I need this medicine?

Tenofovir is used together with other medicines used to treat viral infections such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection which can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Tenofovir is also used on its own or together with other medicines to treat hepatitis B virus infection of the liver.

This medicine is not a cure for HIV and hepatitis infection. It only helps to keep the virus in check and can help improve the quality of life. It does not prevent the spread of HIV and hepatitis to other people.

 


How do I take this medicine?

Take Tenofovir exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

This medicine may be taken with or without food but consistently either always with food or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Tenofovir is available as tablets or oral powder.

If you have are taking the powder form, mix it with soft food such as applesauce, baby food or yogurt and swallow it immediately to avoid bitter taste.

Tenofovir must be taken at regular intervals as instructed for it to be effective. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take
this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.

Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don’t, the infection will not be properly controlled.
